With the next-gen consoles coming out in less than a week starting with the PS4, I will be the first to tell you that I will be getting my hands on the new next-gen consoles, not because of fanboy-ish or hardcore desires of the system, but because I work for a video gaming website that needs to put out the reviews that people need and this one is huge. But if I didn't work here, I could easily wait for the next batch to come out early 2014. Why you ask?
1) Day One Patches
What you are essentially telling me is that the companies are sending out incomplete systems, a system that isn't fully functional until you download this patch. Next problem is the size of these Day One Patches. The sizes are big, yes indeed, but the two main problems is that everyone don't have the high internet speeds to download the patches. Some gamers might have to wait up to maybe 12 hours to download the patches.
The other problem is the hourglass effect, which is a lot of people trying to download the same patch from the same servers, millions of gamers almost simultaneously, will probably make the download even slower or crash temporarily. Ouch to everyone if that happens for a period of time. Besides, didn't anyone learn anything from the Nintendo WiiU Launch Day?
2) Peers
What console do all of your friends have? Simple question, but is the basis for mostly everyone. If you so happen to be the last of your friends to get a console, you would probably go with what everyone else has to borrow games and play online with. Let's be serious, your friends' opinion goes a long was with situations and problems you have, that's why you have them in the first place. Now think about it in a child or adolescent's mindset. Makes sense now doesn't it?
3) Genre/Gaming Experience
Now if the other two didn't apply to you at all, which I am pretty sure at least one of them did, then this is to the knowledgeable gamer who took their time or who has a lot of gaming hours under their belt and getting another system from the previous generation. This is the gamer who basis their decision on the system and what it can offer him/her. How the controller feels playing for hours on end, online experience, exclusive titles that are coming to the system, and any additional features that come with the system because each one of them has their own uniqueness.
Xbox is good for FPS and Action games because of the controller and the multiple people that are on XBL. PlayStation is heavy RPG and Single Player Experiences because being made in Japan, where that is big. Nintendo is a party experience system that is based on its difficult, but simplistic style where anyone can get into it. It also isn't a online juggernaut like the other two systems, but base their multiplayer experience on in-room players doing multiplayer games like Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, and others.
I am a Story/Campaign-based gamer because of my past gaming experiences with AWESOME games (Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VII, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and etc.) so I need a games that will give me at least a 30+ hours campaign, but with the rate of games now-a-days with being immersed with the graphics, I can only hope for a 20 hour game (The Walking Dead, Last of Us, LA Noire) unless I get the JRPGs that come to the states about twice a month. So PlayStation gives me most of what I want, but I can also enjoy a romping FPS that I enjoy the XBL and the controller.
So what is your reason the you "fanboy"? Why do you stay loyal to one specific system? What or is it because you had to choose one or the other? Were your friends responsible for your decision? or are you game savvy and choose one or both or all three because you could/wanted to? Comment below and check out our Facebook page here!
