"Nope. I am waiting until (Insert Game) to come out to pick up (Insert Console)."
This is the line that most gamer circles, tweets, blogs, and discussion boards everywhere on the face of the planet has in one way or the other. But is it pure procrastination or is it truly wanting to play the specific game first on the system that you have your eye out for? But what about the other games that are coming/already out soon/now? Will the game hold your attention that long that you are only set in your mind for this specific game and not worried about the other games coming out that make the system obsolete to you. We dive into this discussion...
It is true, by history alone, that a single game can be the difference maker, or the selling point, to gamers on the purchase of a system. Look to the earlier days of Nintendo. Super Mario World for the SNES, Mario 64 for the N64, Wii Sports for the Wii...single games that defined that system and were excellent selling points that got millions of people into gaming or to purchase the system. We can look to other systems as well...the 2K series for the Dreamcast, Sonic for the Sega Genesis, Halo for the Original Xbox, Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, heck, I bought the PlayStation 3 with the "rumor" that Kingdom Hearts 3 would be coming out for the system (guess what...bought PS4 still, for one of the reasons, for same game still). There are also games that have been proven the difference makers in the success of systems. Answer this, if it wasn't for the Legend of Zelda series and Pokémon, do you still think the GameBoy would have lasted this long?
But now exclusives are fading like the popularity of the Neo Geo and with new add-ons and applications with systems (online play, Twitch, Skype, ESPN) there are more reasons to purchase a system than based solely on games alone. But why do gamers buy systems? To escape the reality that we all live in to go to a far away place to become an NBA superstar, a Knight saving a realm, a sarcastic protagonist fighting a evil corporation, or just a Italian plumber saving a beautiful Princess from the clutches of a Dragon Overlord.
Now, with the next gen out, all I hear these days is "I am going to wait until the bugs are fixed", "I am waiting for Second Son for the PS4", "I am waiting for Destiny for the XB1", "I am waiting for Super Smash Bros U for the Wii U", and so forth. Why is that just the one game makes you want to purchase the system? Look to the other games that came out to gain the enjoyment that you are looking for as well. Just cause you (believe) the game you are waiting for will be awesome doesn't constitute you to shun all the other games. There could be more games that you could and possibly would enjoy that is being offered. Search. Explore. Try. You just didn't so happen to like whichever game just off luck or randomness. You heard about it, read about it, looked online for screenshots, learned about the characters an story.

Do I believe that a single game CAN make a system purchase worth the cash drop? Yes. Do I believe that it SHOULD, no, but it happens on a regular basis everywhere worldwide. That makes no sense like buying a really ugly sweater just because of its name brand or buying a car only because it has a stylish body. To invest money into something that is suppose to give you a level of satisfaction and entertainment for a long time, patience, research, and opinions should be a must in my opinion especially since you will be investing more money in the form of games, internet, DLC, accessories, and more.
So to the gamers or just casual gamers that look for a once a year game, take your time and invest into something that going to last you for a couple of years because that is what having a console is: an investment. Also, don't be a "one trick pony" and just play one game per ear. Explore the different genres and worlds that the developers create. You wouldn't eat pizza all day every day for a year and think that you would still enjoy it everyday. You would want to eat something else sooner or later. That's the same way to video gaming. By the way, can't wait for Destiny this Fall on the PS4.
